Event Details

The meaning of localism is constantly shifting. The challenges facing councils include:

  • the apparent rejection of elected mayors
  • continued poor turnout in local elections and disaffection with politics
  • the need to build social capital, locally led regeneration and local supply chains, to build confidence in the role of councils as placeshapers

This workshop will provide an opportunity for delegates to share ideas and their experience in implementing the spirit of 'localism' rather than simply provide an analysis of the legislation.

Who should attend?

Attendance at this interactive event would benefit anyone involved in establishing or delivering localism agendas:

  • Chief Executives
  • Leaders
  • Local members
  • Service directors
  • Officers charged with delivering a localism agenda
  • Representatives of partner organisations

Facilitators

Keith Shephard will act as the lead facilitator for this workshop being a highly experienced senior public sector manager having:

  • extensive experience of close working with elected leaders and chief officers in a large two tier county.
  • led the development of Hertfordshire’s Sustainable Community Strategy and the countywide Local Strategic Partnership.
  • made a significant investment in relationship and reputational management, alongside a work programme that included a wide range of partner organisations from the public, private and third sectors.

He will be supported by Geoff Brown who has

  • significant management experience within a large county council
  • worked for a district council
  • specialisms in performance improvement, policy, equalities, involvement and localism.

Programme

Delegates are invited to show case what they have done or are doing to demonstrate what localism means. To do so they should contact Keith; either by e-mail at ks@elgh.org.uk or by telephone on 01707 895756.

The final programme for the event will be designed around the various case studies but allowing plenty time to exchange ideas and thoughts; and to plan what to do next.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the seminar commencing.
